Things are shutting down steadily up here in the Yukon. Mid-sept seems to be the common day for taking in signs and boarding up windows. Employees are now returning to other jobs, other places and other lives. We felt the change in climate as well today when we decided to take the White Pass and Yukon train to Skagway. (Tomorrow is the last train before closing for winter.)
This was a chance to do some travelling without Bill driving. We were picked up at our doorstep by a huge bus and taken 144 km to Fraser where we hopped on the train to Skagway. The trip was beautiful and ever-interesting as we are reminded of the lives of the desperate men and women who were trying to get to the gold in Dawson. Of course it is now cruise ships that attract people to Skagway.
The weather changed not far into our trip and I realized that checking the Whitehorse weather was not going to mean anything after heading over the mountains to the rainy coast. We were lucky and had rain for some of the trip there and some back but none while we were in town. The trip was the thing - we only had time for lunch before getting back on a coach and returning home.

| Part of 1898 trail still exists - barely wide enough for two men to pass. Men had to make climb up the treacherous pass many times to haul the required 1 ton of supplies (enough food for a year). |

| Skagway - only two ships in port today. Snow on mountains is new. |
