We both had a good afternoon in Dawson City yesterday - Bill went for bike rides and I toured the Hammerstone Gallery and took a beading class. What fun to be taught by a woman whose grandmother taught her. Like all skills, it looks much easier than it is. My keychain took two hours!! Fran was a patient teacher and showed a few skills that she had either learned from her grandmother and aunt or figured out herself. A lovely two hours. Interesting tour too. When hearing about the gold rush, how many have heard about the Tr'ochek people whose 5,000 year-old-fish camp was taken over by 30,000 prospectors in a matter of months? After decades of negotiation and archeological proof that the miners weren't there first (!), the Tr'ochek people have self-government and are teaching their language to children starting in grade one.
Wandering Dawson, we came across a fellow with a mammoth's tusk in his truck. He is a gold miner and has collected dozens. I guess it can be processed to be carved like ivory. He used to get thousands for them but government attempts to stop trade in ivory has lowered his prices.
